Our work combines academic knowledge of English Literature with a genuine love of fiction in its many forms—from classic novels, poetry, and drama to contemporary series, films, and anime.

With advanced academic training in English Literature and a PhD background in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), we approach stories not simply as entertainment, but as texts worthy of careful examination. We are interested in what makes a story work, why certain characters remain memorable, how themes develop, how narratives create emotional effects, and how writers and creators use language, structure, symbolism, characterisation, perspective, pacing, and other literary and narrative techniques to communicate meaning.

We genuinely love stories in their many forms. Reading novels and poetry, studying plays, and watching anime, television series, and films are always part of our lives. Our enthusiasm for anime and television series comes from the same place as our love of literature: curiosity about storytelling. A flawed character can raise the same questions about characterisation whether that character appears on the page or on the screen. For us, these interests are not contradictory. They are different expressions of the same fascination: the art of telling stories.
We created it as a space where literary studies can meet the stories that people actually read and watch. Literature does not exist only in canonical novels, celebrated poems, and traditional drama. Narrative techniques and literary devices can be found across an enormous range of storytelling forms. A contemporary television series or anime can therefore be examined with many of the same critical questions that we apply to a novel or a play.
What questions does Deep Litera answer?
Our approach is both critical and technical. We are interested not only in asking what a story means, but also in understanding how it produces that meaning. Rather than stopping at questions such as “Did we like this story?” or “Was this character good or bad?”, we try to go further. We examine how a work produces its effects and why particular creative choices succeed or fail. Why does a particular character feel compelling? How does a writer construct a character arc? Why does a particular scene work—or fail to work? How does narrative structure affect the audience’s experience? What makes a theme convincing rather than merely stated? How do symbolism, foreshadowing, pacing, dialogue, conflict, world-building, and point of view contribute to a work’s effectiveness?

We believe that critical analysis should not destroy the enjoyment of a story. On the contrary, understanding how a story is constructed can make the experience of reading or watching it even richer. Critical analysis can deepen our appreciation of the stories we love.
We can admire a work while recognising its weaknesses, and we can criticise its flaws without dismissing everything it accomplishes. A beloved story does not need to be treated as perfect, and a technically impressive work does not necessarily need to be emotionally meaningful to everyone. Good literary criticism should make room for both appreciation and criticism.
We therefore try to maintain a balance between academic depth and accessibility. Our aim is not to make analysis sound complicated; it is to make complicated ideas understandable.
